Counterparty
Counterparty is an open-source, peer-to-peer financial platform and protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. Launched in 2014, Counterparty extends Bitcoin’s functionality by enabling the creation and exchange of custom tokens, decentralized financial instruments, and digital assets without requiring any changes to the underlying Bitcoin network. It operates through its own native token called XCP, which is used for executing advanced features such as token creation and decentralized exchange transactions. The Counterparty protocol utilizes embedded data within regular Bitcoin transactions to facilitate asset issuance, exchange, and smart contract execution. As one of the earliest token platforms, Counterparty played a significant role in the emergence of blockchain-based digital collectibles and is well known for hosting the first major NFT project, Rare Pepes. Counterparty’s development and community resources are maintained through open-source contributions and are coordinated via its official website and social media channels.
